women’s rights Post-Roe Era

Jun 11, 2022

This research paper evaluates the current state of women’s rights in America post-Roe v. Wade. The research will explore the effects of recent Supreme Court rulings and state-level abortion bans on women’s ability to access safe and legal abortions, as well as the overall impact on women’s reproductive rights. Additionally, the paper will consider the potential ramifications of a future overturn of Roe v. Wade, and how this could further restrict women’s rights in America.

It is clear that the issue of abortion is one that remains highly contested in America today, nearly 50 years after the Supreme Court’s landmark Roe v. Wade ruling legalized the procedure nationwide. In recent years, we have seen a renewed effort by anti-abortion activists to overturn Roe and ban abortion at the state level. While these efforts have so far been unsuccessful in overturning Roe, they have had a significant impact on women’s ability to access safe and legal abortions.

For example, in 2013, the Texas Legislature passed a series of restrictive abortion laws that dramatically reduced the number of abortion providers in the state. As a result of these laws, many women were forced to travel long distances to obtain an abortion, and some were even forced to cross state lines. These restrictions placed a significant financial burden on women seeking abortions, as well as an emotional one.

In 2016, the Supreme Court struck down these Texas laws in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt. However, the Court’s ruling was based on a technicality, and left open the possibility that similar laws could be passed in other states. Indeed, we have already seen several states pass abortion bans that are likely to be challenged in court.

If Roe v. Wade were to be overturned, it would have a significant impact on women’s reproductive rights in America. Without Roe, abortion would once again become illegal in many states, and women would be forced to seek out illegal and dangerous abortions. Additionally, the overturn of Roe would likely lead to greater restrictions on contraception and sex education, as well as a rollback of other hard-fought gains for women’s rights.

It is clear that the future of women’s reproductive rights in America is uncertain. However, one thing is certain: the fight for women’s rights is far from over.
