War is a devastating experience that has far-reaching consequences. Through her graphic novel Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi gives readers a glimpse into the many ways in which war can affect the lives of those caught in the middle of it.
The physical effects of war are obvious and well-documented. The mental and emotional effects are often less talked about, but can be just as devastating. In her graphic novel Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi depicts the many ways in which war affects the lives of those caught in the middle of it.
The physical effects of war are most apparent in the scenes where Marjane is injured or witnesses others being hurt. In one instance, she is hit by a piece of shrapnel while standing in line for bread. She is also present when her friend Ahmad is killed by a bomb blast. These incidents leave her with both physical and emotional scars that take time to heal.
The mental effects of war are also evident in Persepolis. Marjane’s father suffers from depression and anxiety as a result of his experiences during the war. Her friend Anoosh is so traumatized by his time in prison that he attempts suicide upon his release. War takes a toll on the mental health of those who experience it firsthand.
The emotional effects of war are perhaps the most difficult to quantify. Marjane Satrapi demonstrates how war can cause feelings of hopelessness, despair, and loss. The death of loved ones, the destruction of homes and livelihoods, and the constant fear of violence all take an emotional toll on those caught in the midst of conflict.
