Types of Dementia and associated symptoms

Jul 21, 2022

This paper examines the types and symptoms of dementia. Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a set of symptoms that impact cognitive abilities.

Types of Dementia

There are many types of dementia.

Alzheimer's Disease

This is the most common type of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of all cases. Symptoms typically develop slowly and get worse over time. Early symptoms may include difficulty remembering recent events or conversations, mood changes, and decreased motivation. As the disease progresses, symptoms may include problems with language, disorientation, severe confusion, restlessness, and aggression.

Vascular Dementia

This type of dementia is caused by damage to the brain's blood vessels. It can lead to a sudden decline in cognitive abilities (known as multi-infarct dementia) or a gradual decline (known as subcortical vascular dementia). Symptoms may include problems with executive function (e.g., planning and organization), memory loss, and difficulty understanding spoken or written language.

Lewy Body Dementia

This type of dementia is characterized by the presence of Lewy bodies, which are abnormal structures that develop in nerve cells. Symptoms may include hallucinations, delusions, sleep problems, and Parkinson's disease-like movement abnormalities.

Frontotemporal Dementia

This type of dementia affects the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. It can lead to changes in personality and behavior, as well as problems with language and executive function.

Dementia with Lewy Bodies

This type of dementia is a combination of Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia. Symptoms may include memory loss, confusion, hallucinations, and Parkinson's disease-like movement abnormalities.

Huntington's Disease

This is a progressive brain disorder that leads to dementia. Symptoms may include changes in personality and behavior, problems with coordination and movement, and cognitive decline.

Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome

This syndrome is caused by a deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B1). It can lead to problems with memory, learning, and coordination. Symptoms may include confusion, disorientation, and difficulty understanding spoken or written language.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus

This condition is caused by the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. It can lead to problems with walking, urinary incontinence, and dementia.

Symptoms of Dementia

The symptoms of dementia vary depending on the type of dementia. However, common symptoms include memory loss, problems with language and communication, difficulty with executive function (e.g., planning and organization), and changes in mood and behavior. As the disease progresses, symptoms may become more severe and include hallucinations, delusions, and difficulty walking or doing other activities of daily living.
