The most common addictions among Americans

Apr 15, 2023

This assignment discusses the most common addictions among Americans. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) estimates that 21 million people in the United States over the age of 12 suffer from substance use disorders. Alcohol is by far the most commonly abused substance, with 17 million individuals dependent on or abusing alcohol. Other popular addictive substances include nicotine, marijuana, opioids, cocaine, and sedatives.

Alcohol addiction is particularly widespread—30% of the American population aged 12 or older has reported some level of current alcohol use disorder (AUD). In addition to physical and psychological harm caused by AUDs, excessive drinking can lead to other risky behaviors such as driving under the influence and engaging in unprotected sex. It is estimated that 88,000 deaths a year are attributed to excessive drinking.

Tobacco use is also an extremely prevalent addiction in the US, with 34 million current smokers. Smoking has been linked to a variety of physical health issues, including cancer and cardiovascular disease. In addition, secondhand smoke is responsible for 41,000 deaths each year in non-smokers exposed to it.

Opioids, including prescription pain relievers and illegal drugs such as heroin and fentanyl, have become increasingly popular among Americans since the 1990s. Around 2 million individuals are estimated to be dependent on or abusing opioids; in 2017 alone, there were over 49,000 opioid-related overdose deaths. Opioid addiction can lead to a number of serious physical and mental health issues, including addiction, overdose, and death.

Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the US; over 22 million Americans report having used it in the past month. While marijuana has not been linked to physical health problems, there is some evidence that long-term use may lead to psychological issues such as anxiety and depression. Additionally, it can impair cognitive abilities such as memory and concentration.

In conclusion, alcohol and tobacco are the two most commonly abused substances among American adults; however, opioid abuse is also increasingly widespread and poses a serious risk to public health. Marijuana use is also widespread but has not been linked to physical health issues.
