The African American Soldiers in the American Revolution

This essay explores the role and contributions of African American Soldiers in the American Revolution. Although the Continental Army was racially segregated, African Americans were still a part of it. As many as 5,000 African Americans were actively engaged in various capacities throughout the war effort.

African American soldiers did not only serve in combat roles but also provided support services such as cooking, laundering, carpentry, shoeing horses and caring for sick or wounded soldiers. These important services helped to keep morale high among troops on both sides during this tumultuous time. In addition to their regular duties, they often fought with distinction when called upon.

At least two individual African-American heroes stand out from this period: Crispus Attucks, who is widely recognized as the first casualty of the Revolutionary War, and Lemuel Haynes, who was one of the first African-American officers in the Continental Army. Both men are remembered as important figures who helped to shape America's future by fighting for freedom from British rule.

African American soldiers continued to serve in the military long after the Revolutionary War ended, although their service often went unrecognized. It wasn’t until 1947 that President Harry Truman issued an executive order officially desegregating the United States Armed Forces. Even today, however, we continue to honor and recognize those brave African Americans who fought for our nation’s freedom during the American Revolution. Their courage and commitment should never be forgotten.
