Stress Effect on Physical and Mental Health

Oct 21, 2022

The paper analyzes the primary effects of stress on human health. The study outlines the concept of stress as well as estimates its ultimate causes. The paper further discusses the immediate health implications of stress. Stress is often cited as a significant factor in deteriorating physical and mental health (Wetter, 1993). In particular, stress has been shown to have deleterious effects on the cardiovascular and immune systems (Kiecolt-Glaser & Glaser, 2002).

It is well-documented that chronic stress can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease (Chida & Steptoe, 2008). Individuals who are constantly under stress are also more likely to develop ulcers and other gastrointestinal problems (Kavanagh et al., 2003). The immune system is also adversely affected by stress. Prolonged exposure to stressful situations can lead to a suppression of the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infection and illness (Segerstrom & Miller, 2004).

Aside from its physical effects, stress also takes a toll on mental health. Stress has been linked to depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders (Kessler et al., 2005). Individuals who are constantly under stress are also more likely to develop cognitive problems, such as difficulty concentrating and poor memory (Yaffe et al., 2002).

The paper concludes with a discussion of the various ways in which stress can be managed. Some of the coping mechanisms that are discussed include exercise, relaxation techniques, and social support.
