Stress and Anxiety amongst Students

This paper discusses some of the major sources of Physiological, Social and Psychological stress and anxiety in students. It also looks at how different types of anxiety disorders are manifested in students. It is important to be able to identify stress and anxiety in order to manage it effectively.

 

Sources of stress and anxiety for students

 

There are many sources of stress and anxiety for students. These can be divided into three main categories: Physiological, Social and Psychological.

 

1. Physiological stressors are those that relate to the physical body and its functioning. Examples of physiological stressors include illness, injury, poor nutrition, sleep deprivation and substance abuse.

 

2. Social stressors are those that relate to the individual's relationships with others. Examples of social stressors include bullying, peer pressure, family conflict and social isolation.

 

3. Psychological stressors are those that relate to the individual's mental and emotional state. Examples of psychological stressors include exams, public speaking, job interviews and relationship issues.

 

Anxiety disorders in students

 

There are many different types of anxiety disorders that can affect students. Some of the most common types of anxiety disorders include Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

 

1. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is characterized by excessive worry and anxiety that are not focused on any specific object or situation. Students with GAD often have difficulty concentrating, sleeping and relaxing.

 

2. Panic Disorder is characterized by recurrent panic attacks that are accompanied by physical symptoms such as heart palpitations, shortness of breath and dizziness. Panic attacks can occur in any situation, even if there is no apparent trigger.

 

3. Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is characterized by intense fear and anxiety in social situations. Students with SAD often avoid social interactions or activities, and may feel extremely self-conscious and anxious when they are around other people.

 

4. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by obsessions (recurrent, unwanted thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive behaviours or mental acts that the individual feels compelled to do). Students with OCD often have difficulty concentrating on their studies or daily activities due to their obsessions and compulsions.

 

Identifying stress and anxiety in students

 

There are many different signs and symptoms that can indicate that a student is experiencing stress or anxiety. Some of the most common signs and symptoms include:

 

1. Physical symptoms: headaches, stomachaches, muscle tension, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, changes in appetite.

 

2. Emotional symptoms: feeling overwhelmed, irritable, anxious, sad or depressed.

 

3. Behavioural symptoms: withdrawing from friends and activities, increased use of alcohol or drugs,skipping class, declining grades.

 

4. Cognitive symptoms: difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, negative thinking.
