There are two main types of sleep: REM (rapid eye movement) and non-REM. REM sleep is when you dream and your eyes move quickly in different directions. Non-REM sleep is divided into three distinct phases: light sleep, deep sleep, and ultra-deep sleep.

The first stage of non-REM sleep is called light sleep. This stage only lasts for a few minutes and your eyes are slowly moving from side to side. Your breathing and heart rate are also slightly slower during this stage.

The second stage of non-REM sleep is called deep sleep. This stage lasts for about 30 minutes and your breathing and heart rate are at their slowest. You may also experience muscle spasms during this stage.

The third stage of non-REM sleep is called ultra-deep sleep. This stage only lasts for a few minutes and your body is completely relaxed. Your breathing and heart rate are also at their slowest during this stage.

REM sleep makes up 20-25% of your total sleep time. Non-REM sleep makes up the other 75-80%.

The average person needs 7-8 hours of sleep per day. However, some people may need more or less depending on their age, lifestyle, and health condition.

There are many health benefits associated with getting enough sleep. These include improved mood, better concentration, reduced stress levels, improved memory, and reduced risk of accidents.

There are also several disorders that can disrupt your sleep. These include insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and narcolepsy.

Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder and it is characterized by difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that is characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. These pauses can last for a few seconds to a few minutes and they can occur several times per night.

Restless legs syndrome is a sleep disorder that is characterized by an irresistible urge to move your legs. This urge is often accompanied by a tingling or crawling sensation.

Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder that is characterized by sudden and uncontrollable episodes of falling asleep during the daytime. These episodes can last for a few seconds to a few minutes.

If you are having trouble sleeping, there are several things you can do to improve your sleep habits. These include: establishing a regular sleep schedule, avoiding caffeine and alcohol before bedtime, creating a relaxing bedtime routine, and exercising regularly.
