This assignment explores if the pass mark in all higher education institutions should be lowered. In this essay, I will discuss both sides of the argument and offer a conclusion on whether or not I think the pass mark should be lowered.
There are several reasons why some people may think that the pass mark in all higher education institutions should be lowered. One reason is that it would allow more students to access higher education. This would be beneficial for social mobility as it would give more people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds a chance to enter into higher education. Additionally, lowering the pass mark might also lead to increased retention rates as more students would feel confident that they could achieve the grade they need to stay on their course.
However, there are also some arguments against lowering the pass mark. One reason is that it could lead to a decrease in the quality of education as more students would be admitted to higher education institutions who may not be able to cope with the demands of the course. Additionally, lowering the pass mark could also create grade inflation, where the value of a degree is diminished as more people are achieving first-class and upper second-class degrees.
In conclusion, I think that the pass mark should not be lowered in all higher education institutions. Although there are some benefits to doing so, such as increased social mobility and retention rates, I think that these are outweighed by the potential negatives, such as a decline in the quality of education and grade inflation.
