This research paper explores sexism in sports. It looks at the history of sexism in sports and how it has impacted female athletes today. The paper also explores the ways in which female athletes are combating sexism in sports.

Sexism in sports is a significant problem that has been present for many years. It refers to the discrimination of women in sport, whether that be in terms of participation, treatment, or opportunity. This can manifest itself in a number of ways, such as the pay gap between male and female athletes, the unequal opportunities afforded to women, or the sexual harassment and abuse that many female athletes face.

The history of sexism in sports is long and complex. For much of history, women were not allowed to participate in sport at all - it was seen as too masculine and unladylike. As such, women were often excluded from competitive sports and only allowed to participate in recreational ones. This began to change in the late 19th century, when women started to be allowed to compete in some sports, such as tennis and golf. However, they were still not treated equally to men and often received less prize money, media attention, and opportunities.

It was not until the 1970s that major progress was made in combating sexism in sports. This was thanks to a number of factors, including the rise of the women's liberation movement and the passage of Title IX (a federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education). As a result of these changes, more and more women began to participate in sports and there was a gradual move towards equality. However, sexism still persists in many forms today.

The pay gap between male and female athletes is one of the most glaring examples of sexism in sports. In general, male athletes are paid significantly more than their female counterparts - even when taking into account factors such as popularity and experience. For instance, in 2018, the top 10 highest-paid female athletes earned a combined total of $105 million, while the top 10 highest-paid male athletes earned a combined total of $765 million. This disparity is even more stark when looking at specific sports. For example, in tennis, the prize money for men's singles is nearly double that of women's singles at Grand Slam tournaments.

There are a number of reasons for this pay gap, including the fact that women's sports are not as popular as men's, and that there is a long-standing belief that women are not as good at sports as men. However, many experts believe that the main reason for the pay gap is simply sexism - the idea that women's sports are worth less than men's.

This disparity has a number of negative impacts on female athletes. Firstly, it means that they have less financial security and are more likely to live in poverty. Secondly, it reinforces the idea that women's sports are inferior to men's, which can discourage girls from participating in sports altogether. Finally, it creates a situation where male athletes can earn significantly more money for doing the same job as their female counterparts, which is unjust and unfair.

There are a number of ways in which female athletes are combatting sexism in sports. One of the most effective is through education - raising awareness of the issue and highlighting the ways in which it manifests itself. This can be done through initiatives such as the Women's Sports Foundation's "Her Life Depends On It" campaign, which aims to educate young girls about the importance of participating in sport. Another way to combat sexism is through legislation - lobbying for laws and regulations that will help to level the playing field between men and women in sports. Finally, female athletes can also use their platform to speak out against sexism and call for change.
