This paper discusses the phases of a child’s psychological development and growth. It is important to note that these phases are not always clearly delineated, and there is some overlap between them. Nevertheless, they provide a useful framework for understanding a child’s psychological development.
The first phase of a child’s psychological development is the oral stage. This stage begins at birth and lasts until around 18 months of age. During this stage, the primary focus of the child’s attention is on their mouth. They explore the world around them through sucking, biting, and licking. The oral stage is an important time for developing a sense of trust or mistrust towards others.
The second phase of a child’s psychological development is the anal stage. This stage begins at around 18 months of age and lasts until around three years of age. During this stage, the child’s focus is on their anus and bowel movements. They learn to control their bowels and bladder through a process of trial and error. The anal stage is an important time for developing a sense of orderliness or messiness.
The third phase of a child’s psychological development is the phallic stage. This stage begins at around three years of age and lasts until around six years of age. During this stage, the child’s focus is on their genitals. They begin to develop a sense of sexual identity and learn about the concept of gender. The phallic stage is an important time for developing a sense of sexual pleasure or guilt.
The fourth phase of a child’s psychological development is the latent stage. This stage begins at around six years of age and lasts until puberty. During this stage, the child’s focus is on their intellectual and social development. They learn to control their impulses and develop a sense of self-control. The latent stage is an important time for developing a sense of morality.
The fifth and final phase of a child’s psychological development is the genital stage. This stage begins at puberty and lasts until adulthood. During this stage, the child’s focus is on their genitals and sexual activity. They develop a mature sense of sexual identity and learn to control their sexual impulses. The genital stage is an important time for developing a healthy attitude towards sex.
