This essay expounds on the evolution of Pakistan-US relations since the end of the Cold War. As part of the global realignment of power structures in the post-Cold War era, US and Pakistani leaders worked together to advance peace and stability across their respective countries. In this period, both states focused heavily on economic development and mutual security cooperation.
The two nations found common ground in their shared commitment to combat terrorism, stem nuclear proliferation, promote democracy, and encourage international trade relationships. To that end, US financial aid to Pakistan increased from $1 billion in 1998 to nearly $3 billion between 2004-2015 (USAID). Along with economic aid came increased military assistance as well as diplomatic support for a number of initiatives aimed at promoting peace in the region.
The US-Pakistan bilateral relationship suffered a major setback after the 9/11 attacks, however. While Pakistan was an important ally in the fight against terrorist networks, its reluctance to fully support the US’s policies in Afghanistan led to heightened tensions between the two countries. This period of tension further exacerbated by diplomatic fissures over Pakistani involvement in nuclear proliferation and other regional security issues such as Kashmir and India-Pakistan relations. The recent election of Imran Khan as prime minister of Pakistan has provided some respite for this strained relationship, and both sides have made efforts to improve cooperation in areas like counter-terrorism and trade.
In conclusion, US-Pakistan relations since the end of Cold War have been marked by progress and setbacks. Both countries have worked to strengthen ties in areas like economic aid, counter-terrorism and regional security, but there remain major disagreements between the two nations that are yet to be resolved. Moving forward, it is essential for both countries to work collaboratively towards greater peace and stability in the region.
