This assignment looks at leadership theories and how they can be used to manage organizational change effectively. Change is afoot in most organizations today, and managers must learn how to lead their employees through these changes if the organizations are to remain successful. This assignment will discuss some of the different leadership theories and how they can be used to manage organizational change effectively.

 

Leadership theories can be divided into three main categories: trait theories, behavioral theories, and situational theories. Trait theories focus on the individual characteristics of leaders that make them effective. Behavioral theories focus on the behaviors that effective leaders display. Situational theories focus on the environmental factors that impact a leader’s effectiveness.

 

Trait theories of leadership have been around for many years. Early trait theories attempted to identify the specific personality traits that make a leader effective. However, these early theories were not able to identify any specific traits that all leaders shared. Later trait theories addressed this problem by focusing on the combination of traits that make a leader effective. These theories suggest that there is no one “type” of leader, but that different leaders may be effective in different situations depending on their combination of traits.

 

Behavioral theories of leadership focus on the specific behaviors that effective leaders display. These theories suggest that there are certain behaviors that all effective leaders share. The most popular behavioral theory is the Ohio State Leadership Studies, which identified two types of leader behavior: consideration and initiation of structure. Consideration refers to a leader’s ability to build relationships with subordinates, while initiation of structure refers to a leader’s ability to set clear goals and expectations.

 

Situational leadership theories focus on the environmental factors that impact a leader’s effectiveness. These theories suggest that there is no one “type” of leader that is effective in all situations. Instead, a leader’s effectiveness depends on the specific situation they find themselves in. The most popular situational theory is Hersey-Blanchard’s Situational Leadership Theory, which suggests that leaders must adapt their style to fit the developmental level of their subordinates.

 

Organizational change is afoot in most organizations today. In order to manage these changes effectively, managers must understand the different leadership theories and how they can be applied to the specific situation. Change is a difficult and challenging process, but by understanding and applying the different leadership theories, managers can help their organizations navigate these changes successfully.
