King Henry VIII

King Henry VIII was the second Tudor monarch, succeeding his father Henry VII. He is best known for his six wives, two of whom he divorced, and for breaking away from the Catholic Church to establish the Church of England. His reign saw a huge amount of change in England, including the dissolution of the monasteries, and laid the foundations for the country we know today.

Henry was born in Greenwich Palace on 28th June 1491, and was named after his grandfather, King Henry VII. He was raised a Catholic, and married Catherine of Aragon, his brother's widow, in 1509. They had one child who survived infancy, Mary I. In 1533 Henry divorced Catherine and married Anne Boleyn, who gave birth to the future Queen Elizabeth I. Anne was executed in 1536 on charges of adultery, and Henry married Jane Seymour, who died shortly after giving birth to Edward VI.

Henry's next two wives, Anne of Cleves and Catherine Howard, were both divorced. His last wife, Catherine Parr, outlived him. Henry died on 28th January 1547, aged 55. He was succeeded by his son Edward VI.
