Islamic State and Values of Human Rights

May 06, 2023

This essay explores how the violent extremist group known as the Islamic State (ISIS) is in direct opposition to human rights values. The essay argues that ISIS violates basic human rights principles, including freedom of belief, freedom from discrimination and violence, and respect for minority groups. It further argues that this situation can only be addressed if states uphold international law on human rights, hold perpetrators accountable for their actions, and take measures to reduce support for such extremist groups.

The Islamic State’s disregard for fundamental human rights is well documented. The group has committed heinous acts of brutality against those they deem enemies or those who are seen to oppose their beliefs; individuals have been subjected to torture, kidnapping, sexual violence and murder. This includes targeting members of minority groups such as Christians and Yazidis, as well as those who do not adhere to their interpretation of Islam. In addition, the group has sought to suppress freedom of speech and expression by carrying out indiscriminate attacks on journalists and anyone seen to be promoting dissenting views or opinions.

Islamic State and Values of Human Rights

Furthermore, ISIS violates basic principles of human rights law. This includes denying individuals the right to freedom of belief, by persecuting religious minorities and punishing any individual who does not agree with their interpretation of Islamic teachings. They also violate fundamental standards of non-discrimination based on gender, race or ethnicity; this is evidenced in their treatment of women and the manner in which they have persecuted members of minority communities such as Kurds and Christians.

The international community needs to take action against the Islamic State in order to protect human rights values. This includes upholding international law by ensuring that those responsible for violations of human rights are held accountable and helping to reduce support for extremist groups. Governments must also work together to counter the spread of violent extremism, by developing effective strategies to prevent radicalization and promoting tolerance and understanding between different religious and cultural communities.
