This paper discusses how Texas became a sovereign republic. The idea of independence was first proposed in 1835 and soon gained momentum as Texan settlers started to rally around the concept of establishing their own Republic. The main instigator of this movement was Sam Houston, an influential politician who pushed for Texan autonomy from Mexico. Following a series of battles against Mexican forces, Texas declared its independence on March 2nd, 1836. To further solidify sovereignty, the newly formed Republic drafted a Constitution in 1845 which provided the framework for governing the country as an independent state. After becoming part of the United States in 1845 and joining the Confederate States during the Civil War, Texas officially became a sovereign republic in 1870 upon being readmitted back into the Union.
The Texas Republic is known for its unique culture and history, as well as being the birthplace of multiple notable figures. This paper will examine how this nation came to be and how it continues to influence the United States today.
Texas's quest for independence began in 1835 when American settlers living in Texas declared their intention to separate from Mexico. The most prominent leader of this movement was Sam Houston, who rallied Texan settlers around the idea of forming a new republic and had a key role in organizing armed resistance against Mexican forces. On March 2nd, 1836, Texas officially declared independence after defeating Mexican troops at the Battle of San Jacinto. Following this victory, an interim government was established with Sam Houston as President. In order to ensure the country's sovereignty and provide a framework for governing, the Texas Constitution was ratified in 1845.
The newly formed Republic faced several trials and tribulations during its short existence including economic instability, border disputes with Mexico, and diplomatic issues with other countries. In addition to this, the Civil War saw Texas join the Confederate States of America, further complicating matters. After the war ended in 1865, Texas was readmitted back into the Union as a sovereign republic in 1870.
Today Texas is one of the most powerful states in the United States and continues to have an important influence on politics and culture throughout America. The history of Texan independence serves as an example of how citizens can rally around a cause and fight for what they believe in. As the Republic of Texas celebrates its 184th anniversary this year, it is important to remember how and why it became a sovereign state.
