How can information overload can influence our mental health?

May 20, 2023

This paper explains how information overload can negatively impact our mental health. The sheer amount of information that we are exposed to on a daily basis from various sources such as social media, emails, news outlets and advertisements is overwhelming. It has been argued that this saturation of stimuli creates an environment in which it becomes difficult for us to identify what is important or necessary for us. As a result, we can become overwhelmed by the task of trying to make sense of all the information and begin to feel overwhelmed and anxious. Additionally, this feeling can be exacerbated if some of the information received is conflicting or contradicting.

This state of overload has been linked to numerous mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and stress. This would indicate that individuals who are more vulnerable to these issues are also more likely to suffer from information overload. Furthermore, it has been suggested that individuals can become so overwhelmed by all the information coming in that they can develop feelings of apathy and disconnection as well as a sense of helplessness.

It is important to note that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to dealing with this issue. However, some strategies have been outlined which may help reduce the effects of information overload on mental health. These include; limiting exposure to certain types of information such as news or social media, practicing mindfulness techniques and engaging in activities which allow for greater focus and clarity such as exercise or reading.
