This paper discusses global legislation against gender-based inequality. It reviews different countries' progress in relation to gender equality and provides an overview of the main obstacles that remain.
Despite the adoption of various international conventions and declarations affirming gender equality, discrimination and violence against women and girls remains a global pandemic. In order to address this issue, an increasing number of countries have enacted laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex and gender. These laws represent a significant step forward in the promotion of gender equality, but their effectiveness is often limited by a number of factors.
One obstacle to the effective implementation of anti-discrimination laws is the lack of awareness about these laws among women and girls. This is compounded by the fact that many of these laws are not enforced effectively, due in part to gender bias within the legal system. Additionally, many countries lack comprehensive and coordinated approaches to tackling discrimination and violence against women and girls.
Despite these challenges, there have been some notable successes in the implementation of anti-discrimination laws. In 2013, for example, Nepal enacted a law criminalizing all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls. This law has helped to increase awareness about women's rights and has resulted in a decrease in the incidence of discrimination and violence against women and girls in Nepal.
There is still much work to be done in order to fully eliminate discrimination and violence against women and girls globally. However, the enactment of laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex and gender represents an important step in the right direction.
