Epistemology

May 22, 2022

This paper examines the philosophical discipline of epistemology. One interesting question that epistemologists ask is whether knowledge is possible. This question can be broken down into two more specific questions: (1) what is knowledge, and (2) is it possible for us to have knowledge? In order to answer these questions, we must first understand the nature of epistemology itself.

Epistemology is the study of knowledge. More specifically, it is the study of how we know things and whether or not our methods of knowing are reliable. There are many different ways in which people can try to gain knowledge. Some people rely on experience or intuition, while others may use reason or logic. The reliability of our methods of knowing is important because it affects whether or not we can actually have knowledge.

There are many different theories of knowledge, but one of the most prominent is the justification theory. According to this theory, knowledge is justified true belief. This means that in order for us to know something, we must first believe it to be true. We must also have good reasons for believing it to be true. Simply put, our beliefs must be based on evidence or else they will not count as knowledge.

The justification theory is a popular view, but it has some problems. One problem is known as the Gettier problem. The Gettier problem is an argument that shows that the justification theory is not always correct. This argument was first proposed by Edmund Gettier in 1963.

The Gettier problem poses a challenge for the justification theory because it shows that there are cases where we can have justified true belief without actually having knowledge. This means that the justification theory is not always correct. Even though the justification theory has problems, it is still the most widely accepted view of knowledge.

There are many different ways of trying to solve the Gettier problem. One way is to add another condition to the justification theory. This new condition is called defeaters. Defeaters are reasons why our beliefs might be false even if they appear to be supported by evidence.
