Effects of Plastic pollution in the Ocean

May 17, 2022

This assignment will explore the effects of plastic pollution in the ocean and how to mitigate these impacts. First, we will look at how plastic affects marine life directly and indirectly.

Most people are aware that plastic pollution is a problem, but they may not realize the full extent of its impact on the ocean and its inhabitants. Every year, approximately 8 million metric tons of plastic end up in the ocean (Jambeck et al., 2015). This is equivalent to dumping one garbage truck full of plastic into the sea every minute! Not only does this negatively affect the aesthetic value of our oceans, but it also poses a serious threat

It is estimated that there are currently more than 5 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the world’s oceans. This plastic pollution has serious consequences for marine wildlife, as well as for human health.

One of the most visible effects of plastic pollution is the ingestion of plastics by marine animals. Studies have shown that nearly all species of seabirds and a significant number of turtles, seals, and fish have been found to have plastics in their stomachs. Ingestion of plastics can cause blockages in the digestive system, leading to starvation and death.

Plastics can also carry harmful chemicals, such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). These chemicals can accumulate in the tissues of animals who ingest plastics and can be passed up the food chain to humans.

The effects of plastic pollution are far-reaching and devastating. It is essential that we take action to reduce our reliance on plastics and to clean up the mess that has already been made.

What You Can Do to Help?

You can do many things to reduce your impact on plastic pollution. First, choose reusable over disposable items, like water bottles and shopping bags. Reusing items helps to reduce the demand for new plastic products, which can take centuries to break down.

Second, recycle whenever possible. Many types of plastics can be recycled and made into new products.

Finally, spread the word about the problems caused by plastic pollution and encourage others to take action. Together, we can make a difference.
