Economic Stability and Health of Black Community

Mar 29, 2023

This paper discusses economic stability as a social determinant of health for the Black community. Economic stability is defined as having access to resources and opportunities that promote an individual or family's economic health, such as secure employment, access to quality education, financial literacy and other social services. The paper explores how certain disparities in these areas of economic stability can lead to worse physical and mental health outcomes than those experienced by White communities due to increased levels of stress, fear and lack of basic needs being met. In order to address these disparities, the paper discusses various policy initiatives aimed at increasing economic stability among Black communities through promoting job creation, increasing access to quality education, decreasing racial discrimination in hiring practices, etc. It also identifies potential obstacles faced when implementing these policies such as cultural barriers or lack of political will.

It is critical that we begin by recognizing the ways in which our current system fails too many people of color—notably those living in under-resourced communities—and address these issues with tangible solutions. Inequities are perpetuated when the Black community is not provided with access to the same economic opportunities as White communities. Through leveraging our understanding of these disparities, we can work to foster a more equitable society in which everyone can thrive.

Economic Stability and Health of Black Community

To achieve this goal, it’s vital to analyze how policies aimed at increasing economic stability within the Black community can also promote better health outcomes. Research suggests that increased economic stability leads to improved physical and mental health for both individuals and families. For example, stable employment has been shown to be associated with higher levels of life satisfaction and reduced feelings of depression. Additionally, access to quality education has been linked to improved physical health outcomes such as decreased mortality rates from certain diseases.

Ultimately, policy initiatives that focus on increasing economic stability within the Black community can help to create a healthier society for all. Through advocating for job creation, increased access to quality education, and decreased racial discrimination in hiring practices, we can work towards creating a more equitable and prosperous future for everyone.
