Conduct Disorder in Adolescence

Mar 08, 2023

This paper discusses the effects of Conduct Disorder (CD) in adolescence. CD is a mental disorder that affects children and adolescents, characterized by persistent patterns of disruptive behaviors such as aggression towards people and animals, destruction of property, deceitfulness or theft, and serious violations of social rules. Research has shown that if left untreated, these behaviors can lead to greater problems later in life including educational difficulties, substance abuse, unemployment, crime and violence.

Causes of Conduct Disorder in adolescence

CD involves a combination of biological, psychological and environmental factors. Biological elements that can influence behavior include genetic predispositions, neurological irregularities, hormonal imbalances, or the presence of other physical conditions. Psychological influences may include difficulties with impulse control, anger management issues, lack of ability to recognize social cues or thresholds for aggression. Environmental factors such as family dynamics, educational environment, exposure to violence or traumatic events can also play a role in the development of CD.

CD is typically diagnosed by utilizing criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5), which outlines a range of signs and symptoms including aggressive behaviors towards people and animals; destruction of property; deceitfulness or theft; serious violations of rules; bullying; fighting; lying; stealing; and more.

Treatment for CD in Adolescents

Treatment for adolescents with Conduct Disorder is typically a combination of medication, individual therapy, family counseling, and educational support. Medication can help reduce the symptoms of depression, anxiety and other mental health issues that may be related to the disorder. Individual therapy helps adolescents develop strategies to manage their emotions in healthy ways, while also providing them with an understanding of why they have acted out in certain situations. Family counseling educates parents on how to effectively communicate with their child as well as techniques to use when disciplining or responding to inappropriate behavior. Finally, educational support such as tutoring and special education services can help teens stay focused on academics despite difficulties caused by the disorder.
