Colonial History of the U.S.

This essay describes the colonial history of the United States and its influence on modern day America. The American colonies were established by the English in 1607. This was done largely for economic reasons as England sought to gain access to valuable resources, such as timber, fur, tobacco and cotton. In addition to this, many individuals wanted to escape religious persecution in Europe.

The settlement of the original 13 colonies saw a marked change in power dynamics between Native Americans and settlers from Europe. As these new arrivals began to settle along coastlines, they often displaced existing native settlements or pushed them further inland. This led to an increase in tensions between the two groups, culminating in violent conflicts such as King Philip's War (1675-78) and Pontiac's Rebellion (1763-66).

After several decades of settlement, the American colonies declared their independence from Britain in 1776. This resulted in the Revolutionary War, during which the newly formed United States fought for its freedom. After 8 long years of conflict, America won its independence and a new nation was born.
