Children Before Marriage: Contradictions in Society

Mar 02, 2023

This paper explores the contradictions present in society concerning marriage, children and their relationship to each other. While marriage is seen as a necessary step towards adulthood, it is not necessarily a prerequisite for parenting or having children.

This study looks at the various cultural norms related to marriage and parenting, as well as how they are changing over time. It also examines how different generational cohorts perceive and act on this issue.

The findings of this research suggest that there exist contradictory views from both millennials and previous generations about when/if marriage is needed before having children. On one hand, some people still view marriage as essential for parenting; however, others recognize that it is no longer an absolute requirement for having children. In addition, this paper discusses how societal expectations may influence individuals’ decisions to have children before marriage, as well as how these expectations are changing over time.

The implications of this research suggest that while marriage may still be seen as the traditional route for parenting, individuals no longer need to wait until married to have children if they so choose. This study provides further evidence on the evolution of traditional family systems and could prove useful in ongoing discussions surrounding parenthood, marriage and societal norms. Ultimately, this paper aims to provide an understanding of the complexities associated with having children before marriage in today’s society.

Furthermore, this study examines potential influences such as gender, religion, social class and education which might impact an individual's decision regarding when (or if) to marry prior to having a child. For example, research suggests that men may be more likely than women to have children out of wedlock due to their freedom from the expectations associated with marriage and child-rearing. On the other hand, religious beliefs might place stricter requirements on when one should marry before having a child. In addition, social class can also play an important role in influencing society's expectations around marriage and parenting. Finally, educational attainment has been linked to delayed parenthood as individuals with higher levels of education may choose to wait before starting a family until they have achieved certain career goals or earned a desired amount of income.
