Benner’s Model of Skill Acquisition in Nursing

Jun 03, 2023

This paper discusses Benner’s Model of Skill Acquisition in Nursing. This model is used to guide nurses through the process of acquiring skills needed to provide effective patient care. Benner's Five Stages of Skill Acquisition include novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient and expert.

At the novice level, nurses are just beginning their nursing education and lack knowledge and experience with clinical situations. They focus on learning basic facts and principles related to patient care in the classroom setting and have limited understanding of how those concepts apply in clinical practice. In this stage, close supervision from a more experienced nurse or mentor can help the nurse learn quickly and safely while gaining confidence in their ability to provide quality care.

The advanced beginner level is one where nurses begin to apply their knowledge to clinical situations. They are able to recognize simple patterns and anticipate outcomes with a greater level of accuracy, however they still lack the experience and confidence needed to independently make decisions in complex cases. Mentoring and guidance from more experienced nurses is beneficial at this stage as the nurse can learn by observing how these situations are handled.

At the competent level, nurses have gained enough experience to be able to make independent decisions based on clinical evidence. They understand how different interventions or approaches affect patient outcomes and can identify when procedures need to be modified due to individual circumstances.

The proficient level is one where nurses demonstrate expertise in managing patients’ care needs. Nurses are able to detect subtle changes in a patient’s condition that may require intervention and can take the necessary steps to appropriately address these changes. They can also recognize when situations are outside of their scope of practice and make appropriate referrals for specialized care.

The expert level is where nurses have gained a mastery in their area of practice that goes beyond just being able to provide quality patient care. At this stage, nurses are able to think critically about complex cases and come up with innovative solutions. They can also serve as mentors for other nurses who are at lower skill levels, providing guidance and knowledge from their years of experience in nursing.

Benner's Model of Skill Acquisition provides a framework for nurses to develop the skills needed to provide effective patient care. By understanding each level of skill acquisition, nurses can better identify their strengths and weaknesses in order to strive for optimum levels of care. With the help of mentors and other experienced nurses, novice and advanced beginner nurses can quickly move through the stages of skill acquisition while gaining confidence in their abilities. Competent, proficient and expert nurses are able to use their expertise to provide quality patient care that is tailored to each individual’s needs.
