May 06, 2023

This essay is a detailed analysis of the short story “Story Of An Hour” by Kate Chopin. The essay will focus on the nature and function of freedom in the context of her characters, plot structure and literary devices used to bring out a theme.

To set the stage, Mrs. Louise Mallard has just been informed that her husband has been killed in an accident and she is initially devastated by this news. She retreats to her room for privacy and there she begins to experience unexpected feelings about being free from her marriage. This newfound realization of freedom causes an internal conflict within Louise as she contemplates how this freedom affects how she feels about herself in relation to society’s expectations of married women at the time. As the title suggests, this story only spans an hour in Louise’s life, but within that short timeframe Chopin forces the reader to confront their own beliefs and values.

Throughout the story, Chopin uses a variety of literary devices to help illustrate how freedom can manifest differently for different people. For example, Louise’s husband Brently is described as having “a kind face” which reinforces her idea that he was a loving partner despite any potential unhappiness in their marriage. In contrast, Louise is depicted as being quite independent from society with her private retreat and unusual thoughts about freedom that seem to come out of nowhere. Additionally, she has no children or other family members who could be affected by the news of his death. This allows Chopin to highlight Louise’s individualistic approach to freedom and emphasize the point that each person experiences and expresses it differently.

The structure of the story also plays a role in further conveying its theme. The initial shock of her husband’s death is followed by a momentary transition into an alternate reality where Louise imagines what life would be like for her if she were free from the social restraints associated with marriage. This creates an emotional tension between possibility and reality, allowing the reader to explore their own understanding of freedom through Louise’s exploration and contemplation.

Ultimately, Kate Chopin uses “Story of An Hour” to challenge readers to consider how they view freedom, especially when compared with societal expectations. By using literary devices and plot structure, Chopin forces the reader to confront their own feelings about freedom in order to better understand Louise’s views on it. That being said, this story not only emphasizes the importance of individual liberty but also highlights the complex ways in which each person experiences it differently. Thus, “Story of An Hour” serves as a powerful reminder that freedom can come in many forms and is something that should be respected no matter what form it takes.
